Where we land when voting is dark

Righto, time to recap.

Bird of the Year started with a long list of 50 birds nominated by you, dear readers. You then voted for your favorite each day, and each day the five lowest-ranked birds were eliminated until 10 remained.

Counts were sealed on the final day of voting, meaning we didn’t know which bird won the crown until Guardian Australia editor Lenore Taylor opened the all-important envelope this afternoon.

What we do know, however, is the order of the birds before voting goes dark at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday. The events at that time were as follows:

1. yellowish frog mouth

2. Baudin’s black cockatoo

3. gang cockatoo

4. willie wagtail

5. bush stone-curlew

6. Southern emu-wren

7. laughing fool

8. little penguin

9. spotted pardalot

10. wedge-tailed eagle

Our bird data experts will soon bring you some analysis on how this year’s voting turned out, but what I can tell you is that this ranking was pretty consistent across the eight open rounds of voting, although we did see a few flip-flops.
