‘Confusion’ over Trump’s war requests of Australia: Cash

Opposition legal affairs spokeswoman Michaelia Cash said Donald Trump’s latest criticism of Australia was a sign of “confusion” over requests for help reopening the Strait of Hormuz, following another fiery lashing out at allies by the US leader.

Mr Trump took to social media overnight and told countries refusing to join his campaign in Iran to “get some overdue courage, go to the Strait and just STAY”, referring to oil.

“For all the countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the UK, which refuses to be involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: No. 1, buy from the US, we have plenty of it, and No. 2, gather your overdue courage, go to the Strait and just BUY,” he wrote.

“You will have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the United States will no longer be there to help you, just as you are not on our side.

“Most of Iran has been destroyed. The hard part is done. Go buy your own oil!”

Although Australia was not chosen this time, Senator Cash said Mr Trump’s comments still contained a sharp message to the nation.

“Well, I guess you can never underestimate an alliance. So that was actually a comment about NATO allies,” he said.

“But I think the message to Australia is very clear. We must be stronger, more focused and better prepared when it comes to our fuel security at home, especially given our reliance on the Strait of Hormuz.”

“The President has clearly singled out the Australians twice, and there seems to be some confusion about what our response is to the US demands.”

Anthony Albanese denied receiving any request from the US leader to provide military assistance to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

More to come.
