Congress Slashed Quota to 17% in Several Districts, Says Laxman

Hyderabad: BJP OBC Morcha national president Dr. K. Laxman on Thursday accused the Congress government of reducing BC reservation to an average of 17 per cent for the upcoming gram panchayat elections in many districts; this fell well below the guaranteed 42 percent.

Speaking to reporters along with chief official spokesperson NV Subash and others, Laxman stated that BC reservations in various districts like Mulugu and Mahbubabad were only three per cent and in other districts like Bhadradri Kothagudem BCs had no reservations.

BC reservations from 12,733 gram panchayats have fallen from 2,404 (23 per cent) in 2019 to just 2,176 in 2025; This underscores decline rather than progress. The Congress’s strategy includes empty promises, inconclusive caste surveys costing millions of rupees and political exploitation of BC votes.

Laxman alleged that the Congress has jettisoned all constitutional guidelines and existing laws to gain electoral advantage in the assembly elections by making untenable promises. The ruling party is currently preparing for local body elections to get central funds of ₹ 2,300 crore alone.

Despite ongoing court hearings on BC reservations, the Congress is rushing towards panchayat elections. He said that during NT Rama Rao’s tenure in 1988, BCs had 34 per cent reservations but today the figure has come down to only 17 per cent.

“Who are they trying to fool when they claim to have given 42 per cent reservation to Congress candidates? Political parties do not have symbols in local body elections, so such promises are nothing but empty rhetoric,” Laxman said.
