Corpus Christi officials are considering reinstituting a street fee. Here’s why.

Corpus Christi City officials are considering resurrecting a street maintenance fee, which is a cost that was eliminated from public bills in 2024 to help finance housing street repairs.

Temporary City Manager Ernie de La Garza, at the August 21 Budget meeting, earned approximately $ 12 million for housing streets before the sunset at the end of December 2023.

The city personnel in the previous budget discussions did not recommend the return of the wage, but some members of the municipal council expressed their interest in reviewing the initiative and reversed the authorities course.

In this April 2023 file photo, construction workers are preparing to open a strip of Prescott Street near Golihar Road.

The personnel said that the re -submission of the wage in January 2026 could be a 15 million dollars for the residential street program that started in the 2027 fiscal year.

De la Garza said that when it was in force, most inhabitants pay about $ 5.30 per month – an unjustified fee for inflation.

The suggestion given by the staff of August 21 was to re -impose the fee and also to upgrade to about $ 660.

According to a presentation before the Council, a fee of approximately $ 6.60 for the next nine months can bring about $ 15 million for the next nine months – the financing amount required to close the gap of the 2027 budget of the program.

Financing Options

In order to allow the termination of the wage, the vote in 2023 was adopted unanimously – a decision in which several council members have been questioned since then.

City Manager Peter Zanoni, staff, then renewal of the wage and proposed at a level set for inflation, he said.

Although some of the council members have recently stated that they have recently stated that a street fee restoring, both Mayor Paulette Guajardo and Municipal Council Member Gil Hernandez returned to one of the 21 August budget meeting.

Taxes and wages should not be considered as “permanent solutions ,, Guajardo said, asked the personnel to return with other suggestions on how to fill the financing gap.

He said that a route may have bond programs – potentially brings voters the option to confirm the fund that can be divided into settlement streets.

Hernandez claimed that there were other ways to compensate for the financing lost by eliminating the street maintenance fee, including limiting the reserve balance to 20% of the general fund.

He said that this difference represents about $ 10 million to go to the program.

“I prefer to use it instead of allowing him to sit in a bank account that is not used for $ 10 million for the streets, Hern Hernandez said. “I prefer to do so instead of adding a fee to someone’s public service bill.”

Water, waste water and rain water fees have been recommended by the staff to increase next year.

However, Hernandez said that the route proposed by Hernandez would be a one -time resource and will not provide a repetitive financing as a fee.

Hernandez’s final choice, the city, the residents of the house of the real estate tax rate of 2 cents to add to the vote to add a referendum, he said.

This year is not possible, potentially the next next.
