Cyclone Ditwah Update: Indian Army Deploys Special Task Force In Sri Lanka | India News

As the ongoing Operation Sagar Bandhu continues to save lives, the Indian Army on Tuesday announced the deployment of the Integrated Task Force, a highly prepared, self-sufficient composite Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) contingent from the Shatrujeet Brigade, to provide critical relief, restore essential services and support families affected by Cyclone Ditwah in Sri Lanka.

The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka stated that India will bring two Field Hospitals that can be quickly established by Tuesday evening as they are urgently needed in the country. Some 70 personnel are also traveling to provide health support to affected areas.

The Indian Army has deployed a special contingent to Sri Lanka under Operation Sagar Bandhu, launched on November 28, to provide emergency search, rescue and HADR support after Cyclone Ditwah caused severe flooding, loss of life and widespread disruption across the island nation.

Strengthening its resolve to stand by the people of Sri Lanka in their time of need, India has dispatched a contingent of specialized medical, engineering and signals components equipped to provide immediate and sustained assistance.

The medical team consists of Advanced Dressing Stations (ADS) and Mobile Surgical Teams (MST) equipped with an operating room capable of performing major and minor surgeries. It also has a dedicated facility that can accommodate 20-30 patients at a time. The engineering elements of the Indian Army contingent support the restoration of essential services and infrastructure, and the signals detachment ensures uninterrupted communications for relief operations.

Meanwhile, according to local media on Tuesday, citing the Disaster Management Center (DMC), the number of deaths in Sri Lanka due to severe weather conditions triggered by Cyclone Ditwah increased to 410. According to the latest update, 1.4 million people from 407,594 families were affected as floods, landslides and severe weather conditions continued to occur on the island.

On Monday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and expressed his condolences over the loss of life and devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah and assured India’s continued support under the ongoing Operation Sagar Bandhu.

President Dissanayake expressed deep gratitude for New Delhi’s timely and effective assistance, appreciating the rapid deployment of rescue teams and relief materials.

Prime Minister Modi assured of India’s continued support in line with the MAHASAGAR Vision and as the “First Responder” of the region, and promised further assistance in Sri Lanka’s rehabilitation and restoration of public services and livelihoods in the affected areas.
