DC Edit | Trump Must Tone Down Rhetoric

Political violence, however inexcusable, has no place in democracy. But in these turbulent times, when the US presidency has sprouted moments more dramatic than any of Shakespeare’s plays on nobility, there was always the possibility that someone would be ideologically motivated to attack US President Donald Trump.
However, it is conspiracy theorists who are more easily fed by events such as the failed assassinations associated with one of the most protected men on the planet. As if to emphasize the point, “progressive” became a trending topic shortly after Cole Thomas Allen failed to close the last security door to the Washington Hilton’s ballroom.
A former CIA officer stated that ‘false flag’ accusations were common enough, noting that the secret service was the first to capture Vice President JD Vance, while Melania Trump was said to have dived for cover and the President himself was said to be looking around after the gunshots.
Although Thomas Matthew Crooks’ sniping attempt at Mr. Trump helped him close the presidential race in November 2024, it degrades American political culture when he goes to extremes to suggest that anyone will toy with their own lives and the lives of those closest to them in family and government in order to make an impact, win an election, or garner public sympathy. Still, no matter how immoral Mr. Trump may appear to his opponents, it cannot be ignored that he hardly deserves the barbs hurled at him or his family.
Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel may have crossed many red lines in his constant criticism of Mr. Trump, but even by his standards, his gallows humor of calling Melania Trump a “widow in waiting” was too far to be called civil. No wonder, then, that the US President is again calling for his impeachment by the network hosting his show.
Hate may have no boundaries, but it is the slightest expectation that people in public life or on its fringes should be civil, whatever the provocation. The problem is that Mr. Trump does not believe that any rules of engagement will bind him to civil discourse. After all, he has been known to use profanities while shouting angrily at Iran and threatening to destroy an entire civilization. It is worth noting that Mr. Trump called for a cooling of discourse and unity following the shooting incident.
