Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Friday, March 27, 2026, accused the Greater Chennai Police and some officials of obstructing the planned election campaign in Perambur Assembly constituency in the city on Saturday, March 28, and termed the denial of permission as a “fascist attack on democracy”.
Mr. Vijay said in a statement that his party had sought permission for a campaign meeting to be held at Mullai Nagar junction in Perambur Assembly constituency on Saturday, two days ahead of schedule. But on Friday, a day before the planned campaign, the Greater Chennai Corporation had dug holes and erected barricades in the area, he said. “How did these sudden potholes and roadblocks form?” he asked.
Meanwhile, the police made an investigation and said that 3,000 people could not gather in the event area. Mr. Vijay said that based on this assessment, the permit request was rejected on the grounds that the location was not suitable for campaigning. “Shouldn’t the caretaker DMK government be ashamed of acting against TVK with the support of certain officials?” he asked.
“Every time I plan an election campaign, the DMK government keeps delaying or denying permission on various grounds. The deliberate violation of the democratic rights of a new political party that enjoys huge public support creates the impression that some officials are acting as agents of the ruling party.”
“Such an action is a reflection of an authoritarian mentality that thinks that whoever revolts against us will be suppressed by using administrative force. This obstruction is proof of how much DMK fears TVK. The people of Tamil Nadu will remove this anti-democratic DMK government from power.”
