Democrats in the House of Representatives and the Senate on Capitol Hill responded with criticism of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, calling it a “lie” and suggesting the president did not win as Trump said.
While some Democrats, such as Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), argued that Trump’s move to blame former President Joe Biden for the current affordability issues facing Americans was outdated, Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., said he had to get up and leave, describing the president’s speech as a “lie” because he talked about making America healthier.
Sen. Cory Booker, D.N.J. Markey wasn’t the only Capitol Hill Democrat to accuse Trump of lying during his State of the Union address, when Rep. and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., used the same line of attack.
“I don’t want to respond to all of Dr. Trump’s lies,” Booker said when asked about Trump’s address to the nation.

But when discussing Trump’s approach to immigration, Blumenthal admitted that “the border is safer.” However, this comment was immediately followed by criticism about how Trump did this.
When asked for his reaction to parts of Trump’s speech, Blumenthal said, “I’ve long favored border security. I’m glad the border is more secure.” “I think some of the tactics used within the country are truly sad and inhumane. That’s why I think reforms need to be made to stop violations of law and constitutional rights.”

ICE enforcement also appeared to be a sticking point for Omar.

“This happens all the time when a president lies and blatantly forgets that his administration killed two of my constituents,” he told Fox News Digital when asked about some of the outages that occurred during the State of the Union. “It’s important to have the reminder there.”
When asked about her stance on defunding ICE, Omar said: “Look[ed] Forward to do this”.

When asked what she should do to fund ICE and end the current partial government shutdown affecting workers, Omar replied, “Right now there’s actually accountability and people are going to prison for the murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.”
