Democrats sweep Pittsburgh, oust Republican incumbents in PA election

Pittsburgh residents cast their ballots in Pennsylvania’s May 19 primary election, electing numerous incumbents and leading to many new leaders in state positions.

Democrats voted overwhelmingly, winning 26 of 27 key races in Allegheny County. Most importantly, voters supported Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, who will try to win a second term this fall, while some newcomers unseated incumbents as state representatives.

Voter turnout was relatively low; 22.7% of Allegheny’s 915,194 registered voters cast ballots. by district. A total of 207,755 votes were cast.
