‘Keep flies out of paddling pools’ with ‘genius’ 20p trick

A savvy mum has gone viral after sharing her ‘genius’ kids pool hack. This tip may be ideal for families who like to use a pool during the warmer months but do not want to share their pool with bugs and flies.

Scotland-based TikTok creator @Vikkiunfiltered went viral after showcasing the tip in a video, racking up more than 300,000 views. Many social media users loved the trick and said they couldn’t believe they hadn’t thought of the idea before.

Vikki told viewers: “Apparently if you cover your paddling pool with black bags overnight this will stop all the flies and bugs from getting in and apparently this can help warm the pool for the next day too.” In the text in his video, he added: “Wait… this actually works.

“Put black bags over your paddling pool overnight. It stops flies and bugs from getting in. Plus the sun heated the water faster. Scottish heatwave engineering is at its best.”

Many social media users liked this idea. Commenting under the post, one fan said: “Did the same to mine, saved me from refilling tomorrow. Genius hack.” A second reviewer wrote: “Works 100%, been doing this for years, great idea.”

Another fan replied: “What! I’ll try that.” Another said: “We did this in lockdown and the water was so hot” and Vikki commented: “Sure, saved the whole kettle from working!”

Offering a different suggestion, one viewer wrote: “Bubble wrap works too.” One reviewer said: “We have a black paddling pool cover, it heats the water beautifully.”

Another person replied: “Or you could buy a pool cover for a tenner.” But Vikki defended her opinion, explaining that her method costs less than £1. She said: “This worked great and cost about 20p and will reuse the bags every night.”

Elsewhere, a comment read: “We have the same pool. We bought a tarp and just stretched it and nailed it to the ground and yes it helps keep you warm but when you step in it will only be cold on the tops of your wiggling toes.”

However, Vikki revealed that she had the opposite problem. “Oh, I found it really hot, so I finally added cold to it!!” he wrote. The social media user added: “This is great, saves you money too.”

In a follow-up video, Vikki said her hack was an ‘absolute success’. He told viewers: “So yesterday’s hack was an absolute success. The only problem is the pool is too hot now and I’m having to add cold water.”
