Disney to pay $10 million FTC settlement over children’s data

Walt Disney Company will pay 10 million dollars to settle The Federal Trade Commission claims that children claim to be illegally gathering their personal data Youtube.

The FTC claimed that the company allowed data from children watching videos for children on YouTube without notification or consent to parents.

The complaint claimed that Disney did not label some Youtube videos as for children, violating the rule of online privacy protection. The agency claimed that the company could collect data from child -oriented content viewers under 13 years of age and use it for targeted advertising.

In 2019, After a settlement with FTC, Youtube began to ask content content crews to list the uploaded videos were “made for children” or “not for children”. The assignment ensures that personal information is not collected from “made for children” videos and not to offer personalized ads to the audience. Comments are also disabled in these videos.

The proposed solution will require a program application to examine Disney’s 10 million dollar civilian penalty, children to comply with the data protection rule and that videos published on YouTube are “made for children”.

In a statement obtained by CNBC, “To support the welfare and security of children and families, at the center of our work.” He said. “This settlement does not include digital platforms of Disney and operated, but rather, we are limited to the distribution of some of our content on the Youtube platform.
