Football fans have reacted with anger after Donald Trump played a key role in the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington. The decision to award the US president a peace prize and allow him to enter the raffle caused disappointment among viewers on social media platform X.
One person wrote: “Tuned in to watch the world cup draw and it’s just taklu gianni infantino kissing Trump’s ass and spreading this fucking propaganda. Teams draw.” Another commented: “Qatar hosting the World Cup was a call for global condemnation and constant crying.
“What we are witnessing with the USA and Trump is much worse and a bigger disgrace for the sport and the world, but of course no one will care because it’s the West’s. Hypocrites. #FIFAWorldCup2026.”
A third added: “This looks more like a Trump special than the FIFA World Cup Draw.”
The US president was awarded the newly created FIFA peace prize during the hearings. “This is your reward, this is your peace prize,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said.
The football association said the award recognizes “individuals who have taken outstanding and extraordinary actions for peace and, in doing so, united people around the world”.
When he arrived at the Kennedy Center, Mr. Trump told reporters he did not know whether he would receive the money.
He said: “I don’t need awards. I just want to save lives.”
