Donald Trump takes brutal parting shot at Keir Starmer as PM clings to job | Politics | News

President Trump, who harshly criticized the Prime Minister for Britain’s reluctance to help the US in the war with Iran, has now dealt him another blow. Speaking outside the White House before embarking on his journey to China for a much-anticipated state visit with his counterpart Xi Jinping, Mr Trump was asked if he had any advice for the under-pressure Prime Minister.
He replied: “My advice is always clear: Open up your oil in the North Sea.
“You have one of the greatest oil finds anywhere in the world and you are not using it, you are not allowed to use it, and it is one of the best in the world.
“Open your oil in the North Sea and get tough on immigration. Europe suffers greatly from immigration.”
Asked whether Sir Keir would resign, Mr Trump said: “That’s up to him.”
The US President then continued his blast about untapped energy from North Sea oil fields, adding: “You’re being killed because you’re windmilling your country to death.”
The Prime Minister had warned of tense relations at the European Political Community summit in Armenia last week, which was dominated by conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.
Speaking at the summit, Sir Keir said: “We cannot deny that some of the alliances we rely on are not where we would like them to be.”
As he left for a visit to China, Trump told reporters at the White House that he would have a “long conversation” with Xi Jinping about the Iran war, but added that “we have Iran largely under control” so he would not need the Chinese President’s help.
The visit, scheduled for May 13-15, will be the first by a sitting U.S. president to China in almost a decade.
