Donald Trump warned peace plan set to fail as Russian people ‘conditioned’ | World | News

Donald Trump has been warned that a deal to end the war in Ukraine will be rejected by Moscow because the Russians are conditioned on nothing less than “complete victory”. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) wrote: daily report on the conflict that officials and state media “continue to set information conditions for rejecting the 28-point peace plan proposed by the United States, indicating that the Kremlin is actively conditioning the Russian public to accept nothing less than a complete victory in Ukraine”.

It was noted that the First Deputy Chairman of the International Relations Committee of the Russian State Duma, Alexei Chepa, stated that any plan must comply with all Russia’s demands. He also reiterated that Moscow’s aim is for any peace agreement to address the alleged “root causes” of the war in Ukraine. It is “a deliberately vague term that the Kremlin has long used as shorthand for its original war justifications and demands, such as the destruction of Ukrainian sovereignty and the NATO alliance”.

The official also hinted that “the proposed peace plan offers Russia more concessions than previous proposals, but is still inadequate to meet Russia’s maximalist demands.”

Member of the State Duma Defense Committee Andrei Kolesnik claimed that Russia will not give up any illegally annexed territory in Ukraine, which “shows that the Kremlin is not interested in making any territorial concessions”.

He also repeated the “false narrative” that Russia’s victory in Ukraine was inevitable, so Ukraine should now yield to all Russia’s demands.

Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) and Duma Deputy Leonid Slutsky claimed that President Trump’s peace plan is a “good basis” for a solution, but added that Russia’s advances in eastern Ukraine are “equally compelling arguments.”

Experts suggested this meant Russia was “determined to continue its war in Ukraine on the battlefield.”

Meanwhile, ISW noted that Russian state television channels and milbloggers have noted similar narratives and “imply that Russia is not interested in any peace negotiations until it achieves its goals on the battlefield.”

The ISW concluded that it “remains assessed that Russia’s victory is not inevitable and that Ukraine and the West can exploit some of Russia’s key weaknesses to force the Kremlin to negotiate and make real concessions.”

Sir Keir Starmer and Donald Trump While the United States described the talks held in Geneva regarding the peace plan as the “most productive” so far, they agreed today to work together at a “critical moment” for Ukraine.

Sir Keir’s meeting with the US president was his second in as many days, and a Downing Street spokesman said they discussed “various aspects” of high-level talks focusing on the peace plan in Switzerland.

“They agreed that we must all work together at this critical moment to achieve a just and lasting peace,” No 10 said.

The two leaders spoke on Sunday during meetings of US, Ukrainian and European officials, including Sir Keir’s national security adviser Jonathan Powell.

While briefing reporters, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian chief negotiator Andriy Yermak said “good progress” has been made in the talks so far.

Mr. Rubio said it was “probably the most productive and meaningful meeting so far in this entire process.”

He said teams are currently working on recommendations and “making some changes” in hopes of “narrowing the differences” between the United States and Ukraine.
