EastEnders fans left screaming at their screens by infuriating BBC blunder in post about Nigel and Julie’s vow renewal scene – can YOU spot it?

EastEnders fans were left screaming after an infuriating blunder ahead of Nigel and Julie Bates’ vow renewal.
The characters played by Paul Bradley and Karen Henthorn are set to reaffirm their love in tonight’s episode (February 4), available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Ahead of its broadcast on BBC One at 7.30pm, the show’s X account shared a teaser but viewers soon realized a glaring mistake.
The account read: ‘Honey tries to piece together exactly what happened last night on #EastEnders, tonight at 7.30pm on @BBCOne and @BBCiPlayer, as Nigel and Julie prepare to revamp the vowels.’
Fans on the platform, who noticed that the post wrote ‘vowel’ instead of ‘oath’, soon made fun of this mistake.
One wrote: ‘This is an oath. THE VOWEL IS SOMETHING ELSE.’
EastEnders fans were quick to react to a mistake over Nigel and Julie Bates’ vow renewal
The characters played by Paul Bradley and Karen Henthorn will reaffirm their love in tonight’s episode (February 4).
Nigel, who is struggling with dementia, has been cared for by long-time friend Phil Mitchell since returning to Walford in 2024.
Another added: ‘This is pretty good for refreshing your vowels, but what about your consonants?’
The third simply said: ‘*OATH OF RENEWAL.’
A fourth said: ‘I’ll take 2 vowels and 3 consonants’ and a GIF of Rachel Riley in Countdown.
A fifth commented: ‘READING EVIDENCE IS A THING.’
While the sixth agreed: ‘This is 2 i, 2 e and au then.’
Nigel was a beloved EastEnders favorite in the 1990s, before returning to Albert Square in 2024.
Since the character’s return, Nigel has been struggling with dementia, with his mental state worsening.
His long-time friend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) is looking after him, along with Julie, who has since tracked down her missing husband.
Just before Christmas 2025, viewers admitted they were left a “sobbing mess” after a special episode focused on Nigel’s dementia.
Fans soon mocked social media blunder posted by EastEnders’ X account
Having overheard Phil and Julie’s conversation that they were considering moving him to a care home, a distressed Nigel went to the Queen Vic and viewers saw him hallucinate recent figures from his past.
These included Pat, which saw star Pam St Clement reprise her role 13 years after her character’s death, and Barry, which saw Shaun Williamson return after a 21-year absence.
As Nigel became increasingly confused, he also saw visions of his late wife Debbie Bates and younger incarnations of both Phil and his brother Grant Mitchell.
When Phil realized his friend was so upset he finally realized he couldn’t care for him anymore and in heartbreaking scenes Nigel told his friend it was ‘time to let him go’.
Last year Julie tracked down her husband to Walford and returned to Albert Square to be reunited with him.
In December 2025, Pam St Clement reprized her role as Pat Butcher, 13 years after her character’s death, for a special episode highlighting Nigel’s dementia.
The special was praised by many viewers for its sensitive handling of Nigel’s struggle with dementia; Others were excited to see Barry and Pat back on screen after such a long time.
They shared on X: ‘Wow @bbceastenders what a wonderfully emotional episode; Great to see Pat, Barry and Debbie, but seriously Paul Bradley was outstanding tonight, we all love Nigel;
‘Well, that left me a sobbing mess; A very powerful, touching episode. Dementia is so cruel;
‘This episode was so perfectly done after having to watch family members struggle with this terrible disease. Well done to everyone involved, my entire living room was literally moved to tears;
‘#EastEnders wow one of the best #EastEnders ever, so well written, so well written;
I can’t lie, I cried. What a pleasure to see Pat again. Killing him was the worst decision they had ever made;
‘What a touching and beautiful episode of #EastEnders tonight!! And for once, the voice at the end didn’t say “if you’ve been affected by any issues raised in tonight’s episode” but instead gave the number of the dementia action line. I finally burst into tears;’
‘I wasn’t sure I’d like #EastEnders tonight with ghosts in it, but combining past and present was very well done.’
EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available to watch on iPlayer.
