Embattled Starmer tells Labour MPs his leadership represents the ‘mainstream majority’

Sir Keir Starmer has called on Labor MPs to stand behind his leadership, calling on them to embrace the “mainstream majority” as he looks to recover from last week’s humiliating byelection defeat.

On the day the Green Party’s new MP, Hannah Spencer, was introduced to parliament following her historic victory in Gorton and Denton, Labour’s seventh safest seat, Sir Keir made a speech to rally support at a meeting of the parliamentary Labor Party (PLP).

Labor MPs were planning to replace him after the party came third in last week’s by-election, with many only giving him until the local and devolved elections on May 7.

But the prime minister entered the meeting with a growing reputation for the way he is handling Donald Trump’s war against Iran.

Labor MPs had previously lined up in the House of Commons to praise his refusal to engage in conflict with the US and Israel and his adherence to international law under incredible pressure.

Sir Keir used the moment to warn his party not to be fooled by the excesses of Zack Polanski’s Greens or Nigel Farage’s Reform UK after they came first and second respectively in the by-election.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Labor Party, Sir Keir said: “Politics is changing, and it is changing decisively.

“But I believe, and continue to believe, that there is a mainstream majority in this country that does not want either Nigel Farage or Zack Polanski to be prime minister.”

The Prime Minister said Labor had made “progressive change” under his leadership with “moral purpose”.

“Our mission is to ensure Labor is the vehicle for the modern progressive Britain we all believe in,” he continued. “There is no doubt about the generational change that is already taking place.

“The Labor Rights Act is the biggest advancement in workers’ rights in a generation. The Tenants’ Rights Act, which protects 11 million people living in rental housing, is also the biggest change in a generation.”

“What we are doing on child poverty, NHS investment and of course the clean energy vision.”

Sir Keir was helped by the absence of some of his harshest critics among Labor MPs, and he still faced criticism in the chamber.

A Labor MP said: Independent: “The Prime Minister was applauded. There was constructive criticism from many people, including me, but it was not a bad reception.”

But it comes after Ms Spencer won last week’s poll to become the first Green MP to win a by-election and was sworn into Parliament on Monday after winning a seat in the north of England, becoming the party’s fifth MP.

The plumber and plasterer beat Reform UK into second place with a majority of 4,402.

The Labor Party, which had previously held seats in the last general election, came third with 9 thousand 364 votes.

He arrived in Westminster with his four pet greyhounds to mark the historic event.

Mr. Polanski aimed for the Greens to replace the Labor Party, the party of the left in British politics, with an open populist approach.
