Villupuram district police have increased surveillance by installing CCTV cameras at major junctions and networks of national highways covering a radius of 20 kilometres.
As many as 14 high-definition CCTVs have been installed covering the stretch of Tirukoyilur Road from Indira Nagar to Four Roads junction, the stretch from Four Roads junction to Old bus stand, the stretch from Panampattu junction to Koliyanur Road, the stretch of Villupuram-Chennai national highway from Muthampalayam bypass to New bus stand and the stretch of Trichy Road from Periyar Nagar to Janakipuram bypass.
As many as 86 CCTVs have also been installed on approach roads connecting highways and main roads.
“The CCTV cameras, each with a network video recorder and its backup, were connected to the newly constructed Police Control Room at the Integrated Collection complex in Villupuram. Since the backup of each camera could be taken in the control room, investigations could be conducted effectively,” said a police officer.
The police control room was inaugurated by District Collector Sheikh Abdul Rahman and Deputy Inspector General of Police (Villupuram District) ES Uma on Tuesday. Superintendent of Police P. Saravanan was also there.
Cameras will be able to catch errant drivers such as jumping red lights, speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and not complying with helmet and seat belt rules. The license plates of such vehicles will be recorded on cameras. Police said this would also benefit the police in other aspects, including preventing and detecting crimes.
