England achieved their highest one-day international total at Lord’s, beating India by 27 runs to seal a thrilling 2-1 series victory.

Opener Ben Duckett hit 141 from 135 balls at the Home of Cricket, the men’s highest ODI score, as the home side posted 383-7, surpassing England’s previous score of 334-4 against the same opponents in 1975.

Duckett shared an opening stand of 192 with Jacob Bethell, who was bowled out for 91, and eventually managed to take a return catch to Prince Yadav in the 44th over after hitting 18 fours and a six.

Joe Root helped England reach their formidable total by hitting an unbeaten 74 from 48 balls, his sixth successive score of 50 or more in ODIs; Jos Buttler added an unbeaten score of 41 off 13 deliveries late on.

Looking to achieve the target of the second-highest win in the format’s history, India continued their quest deep into the game thanks to Rohit Sharma’s magnificent 138.

The 39-year-old, who was rumored to retire at the end of the series, was in fine form, hitting 17 fours and five sixes in his 111-ball innings.

He put together his own stand of 147 along with Shubman Gill, who hit 77 before being caught lbw by Adil Rashid.

Rohit being bowled through the legs by Bethell in the 38th over was the decisive moment of the match, prompting Virat Kohli to attempt to lead India to victory as the required run rate soared.

Kohli saw the rest of India’s middle order denied cheaply and was then himself caught in the cover of Sam Curran’s bowling of 74, effectively ending the tourists’ challenge.

India’s tail continued to break boundaries but their aim was huge and they finished the match with 360-7.
