England’s warmest June on record down to record-breaking heatwave

The UK had its hottest June on record and the second hottest June on record for the UK, according to the Met Office.
The moon was warm during the day and hot at night; Average temperatures for June reached 17.1C, almost 3C above average. Frequent tropical nights where temperatures do not drop below 20C have helped average temperatures rise.
The UK’s hottest June temperature was 37.7C (99.9F) on Friday 26 June 2026 in Lingwood, Norfolk, breaking the previous record high of 35.6C (96F) set in 1957 and equaled during the infamous 1976 heatwave.
A rare red extreme heat warning has been issued for parts of England and Wales. In parts of eastern England this remained in force for an unprecedented three-day period.
Wales also saw its second hottest June day on record, surpassing the previous mark of 33.7C (92.6F) by recording its hottest June day at 35.9C (96.6F) in Cardiff on Thursday 25 June.
Northern Ireland equaled the June record of 30.8C (87.4F) in Castlederg, County Tyrone.
These June records come on the heels of the May heat wave. Temperatures reached 35.1C in Kew, London, external It broke the previous high of 32.8C, set in 1922 and equaled in 1944.
