Sri Lankan Navy arrests seven Indian fishermen from Rameswaram

On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the Sri Lanka navy arrested the seven Indian fishermen from Rameswaram on charges of illegal hunting in international waters.
According to sources, a mechanized boat owned by D. Irudhaya Dickson, seven fishermen on the ship, entered the sea from the Rameswaram Pier on Saturday morning.
In charges of passing the International Naval Border Line (IMBL), a Sri Lankan navy patrol boat stopped them to question them. Later, A. Dullas, 56, L. Silaa, 26, J. Arul Robert, 53, S. Loilan, 45, K. Arociya Sanrin, 20, A. Baskar, 45 and R. Jesu Rajan, 32, Tangachimadam arrested seven fishermen. The boats were detained.
With this arrest, the number of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lanka navy after the ban on fishing in the Ramanathapuram region increased to 61.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) President K. Selvaperuntagai condemned the arrest of fishermen in the middle of the sea.
In a statement, the fishermen remembered the latest events of such arrests by the Sri Lanka navy while fishing near Katchatheevu Island. Sri Lanka claimed that the navy was involved in attacking fishermen and catching fishing ships.
The authority said that although the state government called on the center to find a permanent solution to this issue, meaningful steps have not been taken.
The center should immediately discuss with the Sri Lankalı government and at the same time facilitate the negotiations between fishermen on both sides to find a permanent solution and to ensure the safety of Tamil Nadu fishermen.
