It will be obvious if Sir Keir is found to have misled Parliament by putting integrity at the heart of his speech to voters in the July 2024 election.
The government has highlighted that Sir Keir and other ministers only learned earlier this week that the Foreign Office had cleared Mandelson for the role despite a negative security assessment.
The fallout quickly led departure This has led some to conclude that Sir Olly Robbins, the Foreign Office’s most senior civil servant, was being scapegoated in a bid to save the Prime Minister.
People familiar with the review process said it was standard practice for ministers not to be told of assessment results because of sensitive personal information.
They said the checks are not pass or fail, but provide a risk-based assessment that leaves the final decision up to senior officials like Robbins.
Sir Keir also faces questions over whether he effectively directed authorities to address concerns about Mandelson, who described previously convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as his “best friend”.
The Prime Minister said he was “absolutely furious” at being left in the dark about the vetting results, describing it as “staggering” and “inexcusable”.
He will make a statement to the Parliament on Monday. Robbins, who was effectively sacked by Sir Keir, will address a committee of MPs on Tuesday and may tell a very different version of events.
