Family of Perth man Cameron Hughes seeking answers after his death in detention in Bali

A 39-year-old Perth man was found dead after being detained at Bali immigration centre.
Cameron Hughes was being held at Ngurah Rai Immigration when he was found unresponsive on Friday night, according to local media reports.
The 39-year-old man, who had been living in Bali for 15 years and has an eight-year-old son, was awaiting deportation due to visa problems.
His family is desperately seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
“Cameron was a beautiful person who loved his family deeply and was a devoted father,” his family said in a statement to the ABC.
“He was resilient, hard-working and took pride in overcoming challenges to make a good life. “Nothing comes close to what was taken too soon. “As a family we are completely torn apart.
“We will work closely with consular staff to understand what actually happened and work with them to understand the full extent of the situation.”
The Bali Times reported that Mr Hughes received emergency medical treatment after officers found him unconscious at the detention facility, but he died on the way to hospital.
Immigration officials launched an investigation into the death, cooperating with the police to examine the scene.
The hospital’s initial findings showed that Mr Hughes may have suffered a heart attack.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family of a deceased Australian in Bali.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” the spokesman said.
“Due to our confidentiality obligations we are unable to comment further.”
