Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke out about Republicans on Monday, accusing the GOP of overreaching on redistricting, saying they were “finishing the job in Texas” and predicting they would fall well short of flipping five congressional seats.
During a news conference at the U.S. Capitol, Jeffries was asked about the Texas state Senate race, in which a Democrat switched seats in the district that President Donald Trump carried in 2020. Jeffries was also pressed on whether Democrats could win four of the five redistricted congressional seats in Texas.
“Yes, Republicans are excited in Texas and they know it,” Jeffries said. “We knew about this months ago and there were various reasons for it.”

Jeffries argued that Republicans were never in a position to win five seats, but instead created a scenario in which they tried to take seats from Democrats, believing there would be no response.
“California has responded decisively, and we will pick up five seats as a result of Proposition 50,” he said, referring to the California ballot measure that reshaped redistricting rules and improved Democrats’ chances in many congressional districts.
“We’ll see over time what happens in Texas, but I can guarantee they won’t win five seats,” Jeffries continued. “They will struggle to get three wins based on their 2024 performance alone.”

Democrats notched another win Saturday as Taylor Rehmet captured a Texas state Senate seat in a district long dominated by Republicans. Rehmet, a labor union leader and Air Force veteran, defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss in the Fort Worth district.
Jeffries praised Rehmet’s campaign and said the victory was decisive.

“It was a bombardment of Republicans in Texas that even caught the attention of Ron DeSantis,” Jeffries said. “They can’t ignore this. Since January of last year, Republicans have been losing elections and Democrats have been winning elections.”
