Fatal snowmobile accidents kill two in western Wyoming in late January

Two snowmobilers died in separate crashes in western Wyoming in late January, authorities said.

Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) responded to a fatal incident on January 26 when a man and woman riding tandem bikes in a small guided group went off trail in the Togwotee Pass area and crashed into a tree.

The man later suffered a heart attack and died from his injuries.

The woman, who was reported to be unresponsive but breathing, was rescued by helicopter and transferred to a hospital in Idaho.

“All of us at TCSAR offer our deepest condolences to the families and friends affected by this tragedy,” the group wrote on Facebook. “This has been a challenging winter so far for our mountain community. TCSAR has responded to four fatalities, two in the last three days.”

“We know accidents happen and we all make mistakes. This message is not intended to shame or judge anyone. Just please remember that when you undertake a rural destination, no matter how big or small, the most important thing is to make sure you get home at the end of the day.” “You all be safe out there.”

Three days earlier, on January 23, TCSAR responded to two more snowmobile crashes on Granite Creek Road; One of these accidents later turned out to be fatal.

Search and rescue teams are trying to locate the snmobilers.

In one incident, a 39-year-old man suffered serious leg injuries after hitting an embankment and tumbling down about 30 metres.

TCSAR received another call from the guided snowmobile team in a second incident after a 32-year-old woman crashed into a tree, losing consciousness and suffering life-threatening injuries.

Jackson Hole News and Guide The man in the incident on January 26 was identified as 31-year-old Joshua Dillon Escamilla, and the woman in the incident on January 23 was identified as Edith Linares Pike.

Teton County Coroner Brent Blue told the press that Pike died as a result of head and neck trauma and was from Stamford, Connecticut.

The coroner’s office has not yet determined Escamilla’s cause of death or hometown, but her family in Florida has been contacted.
