Before the vote, several members of the community confronted Ervin and the rest of the school board; including a father whose words about the situation went viral on social media.

After being informed that he was not allowed to formally ask a question of the board during the emergency meeting, the father said, “Okay, I’m asking a question. You don’t have to answer. But let’s say if you’re really offended by this, raise your hand. If it doesn’t bother you, keep your hand down.”

When none of the board members raised their hands, he continued: “Do you understand what I’m saying here, guys? How would you like your child to talk to him that way?”

“We have to worry about our kids being shot in schools and stuff like that, right? But what we don’t have to worry about are comments a man made to a minor. Would you want your child to be around that man without a camera around? I don’t,” he said, as community members at the meeting applauded in agreement.

“And I’m blown away by every single person here, and let me tell you straight up, if this guy gets a job here soon, I’m going to do my best to raise as much money as I can to get you all out of here. It’s no joke,” he said, prompting more applause and comments of approval from attendees.

Referring to other concerned community members, he continued, “And the rest of them are with me. We’re going to come here at every meeting and everything. This is unacceptable, man.”

The concerned father then turned his attention directly to Ervin: “And look at your face – you don’t even care. This is the community you’re supposed to serve. Look at the distraction. You put us on the map – you embarrassed us nationally. And you just don’t even have the backbone to walk away, dude.”

“It’s so sad you’re still here. It really is,” he later added, “When I was growing up, if anyone had said something like that, whether by accident or not, you were gone.”

Ervin has since defended his remarks about them during the emergency meeting on April 8, claiming in a statement that when he said “hot” he meant the girl was “at work” because of the questions she asked during the meeting.

“Obviously, I saw the clip. Look, I understand, if that’s all you see, I understand why people react the way they do. But that’s not the whole conversation, it’s not even close,” Ervin said, adding that the student “asked good questions, was engaged, handled himself well, especially right before the conversation with the superintendent about hot topics.”

“When I mentioned she was hot, I meant she was in good shape. It had nothing to do with her appearance,” he said, adding: “Spacing a few seconds out of a two-hour meeting can change how the whole thing sounds. And honestly, that doesn’t give her the credit she deserves.”

“I am sorry that this overshadowed a shining moment for one of our students,” Ervin said.
