Mikie Sherrill responds to DOJ sending federal election watchers to New Jersey

Democratic New Jersey gubernatorial candidate Mikie Sherrill said Saturday that “we will not intimidate voters and we are not making any attempt to deter people from voting” after the Justice Department said it would send federal election monitors to his state next month.

“You know, I’m really proud of having open, transparent and free elections. And we’re going to continue to do that and make sure that we’re not subject to any attempts to intimidate voters or keep people from voting,” Sherrill said in a statement Saturday. he said.

“The public needs to have confidence that all of our election processes are secure and that all New Jersey voters can make their voices heard against any intimidation in voting,” campaign spokeswoman Carly Jones said in a statement to Fox News.

Jones continued: “Mikie fully supports prosecuting bad actors who violate our election laws, and her Attorney General will move these cases quickly. But we cannot allow Trump and election deniers to support some ‘stop the steal’ strategy against Jack Ciattarelli when he loses.”

“It is important for us to have uniform rules across our state, and Mikie will appoint an Attorney General who will ensure that all New Jerseyans have full confidence in our election process, regardless of who they voted for,” Jones added.

The Justice Department said Friday it will “monitor polling places in six jurisdictions ahead of the upcoming November 4, 2025 general election to ensure transparency, voting security, and compliance with federal laws.”

“Transparency at the polls means faith in the election process, and this Department of Justice is committed to upholding the highest standards of election integrity,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a statement. he said. “We will devote the necessary resources to ensure that the American people get the fair, free and transparent elections they deserve.”

“The Department, through the Civil Rights Division, enforces federal voting rights laws that protect the ballot access rights of all eligible citizens,” the DOJ said. “The department regularly deploys its staff to monitor compliance with federal civil rights laws in elections held in communities across the country.”
