Congress questions ‘self-declared Vishwaguru’s huglomacy’ as Pakistan plays mediator between US and Iran

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday questioned the government’s “failure” to prevent Washington from assuming the role of mediator between the two warring countries, despite New Delhi’s diplomatic support to isolate Islamabad following the Pahalgam attack in April 2025.

Congress general secretary communications Jairam Ramesh, alluding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said this raises serious questions about the “huglomism of the self-proclaimed Vishwaguru”.

The congressional leader’s remarks came shortly before US Vice President J.D. Vance arrives in Pakistan for important talks with an Iranian delegation led by House Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf aimed at ending the conflict in West Asia.

“But serious questions arise about the substance and manner of Vishwaguru’s self-proclaimed embrace: How has Pakistan managed to carve out a new role for itself despite its role in the dastardly Pahalgam terror attack of April 2025 and India’s diplomatic engagement to isolate it in the wake of the attacks?” he asked.
“This failure is particularly damaging because the Dr Manmohan Singh Government had so effectively isolated Pakistan after the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008,” he said. Also read: ‘Double-engine government’s solution’: Yogi Adityanath ahead of distribution of land tenure rights documents in Lakhimpur Kheri

Ramesh further asked: “How did India allow the US to give this new role to Pakistan, even after the Namaste Trump, Howdy Modi and Phir Ek Baar Trump Sarkar campaigns of Mr. Modi and his cheerleaders?”

He claimed that India had also agreed to a “very clearly one-sided” trade deal in which it gave much more than it received, but the Modi government had failed to gain any influence with the US.

“Why has India, as the current Chairman of BRICS+, not initiated any peace or mediation initiatives – especially since Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia are members of BRIC+?

“What has India gained from its deliberate capitulation to China over the last eighteen months – especially given the significant role China played in Pakistan’s response to Operation Sindoor and its continued support for Pakistan?” the Congress leader asked.

Ramesh said peace must return quickly in West Asia.

“The Strait of Hormuz should once again return to the status quo before the US-Israeli attack on Iran began on February 28, just two days after Mr. Modi concluded his deeply ill-advised and ill-timed visit to Israel,” he said.

The US-Iran talks are taking place during a two-week pause in the war that began when Washington and Tel Aviv launched an attack on the Islamic Republic on February 28.

The war caused oil prices to soar due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route through which 20 percent of the world’s energy is transported.
