First eight grooming gang cases sent back to police for reinvestigation
The first eight closed grooming gang cases have been returned to police forces for new investigations as part of a nationwide review examining hundreds of files for potentially overlooked lines of inquiry.
Operation Beaconport is investigating cases involving two or more suspects accused of sexual abuse and multiple victims from January 2010 to March 2025, where no further action was taken.
Review is limited to cases involving living suspects who have not already been reevaluated.
As of November, 1,273 investigations from 23 police forces were referred to the National Crime Agency-led operation; 236 investigations were prioritized because they involved rape allegations.
At this stage, reviewers believed that in some cases potential lines of investigation were overlooked due to human error.
In November, NCA deputy director Nigel Leary said initial investigations showed there had been errors in some investigations.
“Initial investigations found that in some cases where a no further action (NFA) decision was made, there were existing lines of investigation that could be pursued,” he said.
“We saw what appeared to be potential human error in these cases.
“We found that in some cases these investigations did not follow what we define as appropriate investigative practice, which may have contributed to the NFA decision.
“This includes, for example, identifying but not pursuing lines of investigation, victims not taking statements in what we would recognize as best practice, and suspects not being pursued or questioned in the way we would have anticipated.”
NCA chief executive Graeme Biggar said: “Operation Beaconport is the most comprehensive and complex investigation into the sexual exploitation and abuse of children in UK history.
“After months of careful joint work with the force to lay the groundwork, we have returned the first cases to the force to be reopened. This is the first step towards seeking justice for victims and survivors.”
