Flames engulf building ‘at risk of collapse’ after blaze | UK | News

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a fire at a derelict building in Eastbourne at 4.55pm on Thursday, March 12.

The fire department confirmed that the first floor and roof area of ​​the building were completely destroyed. At 17:40 four appliances and an Aerial Ladder Platform were fighting the fire; The number and resources were increasing towards the evening.

While firefighters remained at the scene, the road was closed by Sussex Police who assisted with traffic control.

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “Please continue to avoid the area and keep doors and windows of nearby properties closed while crews are working. Thank you for your co-operation.”

In an update at 20:00, the service added: “Continuous progress continues to be made. The derelict building has been severely damaged and part of it is at risk of collapse.”

“We ask that you continue to avoid the area.”

There is still a risk of collapse of parts of the building due to strong winds.

The road will remain closed overnight and may not reopen until rush hour. Drivers are asked to plan ahead and find alternative routes.

While it was not reported whether there were any injuries or not, the cause of the fire is unknown.
