Footage shows moment a boy on bail allegedly stabbed a stranger in shopping centre
Footage has emerged of the moment a teenage boy, on bail, allegedly stabbed a woman on an escalator in Melbourne’s east this week.
A 25-year-old woman from Mount Waverley remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition after being attacked while walking through the M-City Shopping Center on Blackburn Road in Clayton on her way to work about 7.50am on Thursday.
The 16-year-old defendant is charged with six offences, including committing an offense while on bail.
CCTV from a liquor store in M-City shopping centre, Clayton, shows a nearly deserted mall before the 25-year-old makes his way towards the escalators on his way to work.
A few minutes later, a young man wearing a white top with black sleeves appears over his left shoulder and stays a few steps behind as he turns towards the escalator.
In the footage, it is seen that he maintains this distance while the escalator lifts them both up and then moves towards the woman’s back with his right hand. He then turns and runs away.
When she turns around, stunned by the sudden contact, he is almost off the escalator and glances over his shoulder as he runs back the way he came.
A passerby then helped the woman and called Triple Zero.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed the woman was taken to Alfred hospital with an upper body injury. He remained hospitalized Thursday night in serious but stable condition.
Police arrested the boy a short time later at a local medical center.
They later charged him with willful wounding, reckless wounding, armed assault on someone, possession of a controlled weapon, theft and committing an offense while on bail.
Police said the child was taken into custody to appear in juvenile court at a later date.
It was the second stabbing in Melbourne in 24 hours. Early on Friday, a 71-year-old man arrived at a Port Melbourne cafe to be treated for three stab wounds.
Police continue their efforts to catch the suspect. Officers said the victim was stabbed by an unidentified man while walking near Crighton Reserve on Liardett Street at around 5.20am.
It was learned that the injured person’s life was not in danger. Police are seeking witnesses and information from the public.
