Foreign Minister Vikram Misri held a courtesy meeting with Bangladesh Opposition Leader and Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Shafikur Rahman on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, on the margins of the swearing-in ceremony of new Bangladesh Prime Minister Tariq Rahman.
Mr. Misri welcomed Mr. Shafiqur Rahman and reaffirmed India’s people-oriented ties with Bangladesh. JeM Ameer confirmed that both countries share ‘deep civilizational ties’ and expressed his hope for stronger bilateral relations.

The post continued, “The External Affairs Minister conveyed his greetings to Dr. Rahman on his new assignment and reaffirmed India’s enduring support to Bangladesh, underlining the people-centric nature of the ties. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman underlined the deep civilizational ties shared by the two countries and expressed his hope for stronger bilateral relations.”
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented India at the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
Mr. Birla said India is ready to support Bangladesh’s efforts to build a democratic, progressive and inclusive nation.

Mr. Birla called the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wishes. He conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s invitation to visit India to the newly elected Mr. Tarique Rahman.
He also met with the President of the Maldives, the Prime Minister of Bhutan and other leaders on the sidelines of the meeting.
Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah praised Mr. Birla’s visit.
In a post on
Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, extended a warm invitation to Mr. Tarique Rahman, Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and newly appointed Prime Minister of Bangladesh, to visit India at a mutually convenient time. In his letter, Prime Minister Modi also invited Tarique Rahman’s wife Zubaida Rahman and daughter Zaima to accompany him.
The letter from the Prime Minister read, “I take this opportunity to invite you, along with Dr. Zubaida Rahman and your daughter Zaima, to visit India at a mutually convenient time. A warm welcome awaits you in India. Please accept, Your Excellency, with best wishes for your health and success and for the continued progress and prosperity of the people of Bangladesh.”
