British woman, 85, killed after storm at Portuguese campsite

An 85-year-old British woman died after an extreme windstorm hit a campsite in Portugal.

Two people were seriously injured and three others had minor injuries at Albufeira Camp Park in the Algarve, Faro’s regional commander in charge of rescue operations told a news conference.

He stated that 23 people were slightly injured in a hotel in Albufeira, which was hit by the storm again in the morning, and 4 people were taken to Faro Hospital.

The national meteorological office, IPMA, said that it was evaluating whether there was a hurricane in the region and that radar images showed that this possibility was very high.

IPMA added that it is difficult to predict when and where hurricanes may occur.

Portugal’s National Institute for Medical Emergencies said the 28 people injured in both sites in Albufeira included six children aged between two months and seven years, all with minor injuries, and 23 adults aged between 24 and 70.

It was stated that the storm hit the region around 11:00 on Saturday and lasted until 15:00.

According to the IPMA website, Faro, Setúbal and Beja (also in southern Portugal) remain under an orange warning today due to persistent rain, sometimes accompanied by heavy and thunderstorms.

On Friday, the Faro region was affected by very intense and local winds, causing trees to fall.
