Former Louisiana mayor Misty Roberts was sentenced to 90 days in prison for raping a 16-year-old boy.
On Tuesday, Roberts, 44, was sentenced after being convicted earlier this year of two felonies, including sexual intercourse (or statutory rape) with a juvenile and indecent liberties with a juvenile.
Roberts, who faces up to 17 years in prison, sexually assaulted the underage victim at his home in July 2024. They were drinking alcohol at a pool party. Roberts was mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, at the time and had held that position since 2018.
As part of his sentence, Roberts must register as a sex offender and pay a $5,000 fine, KPLC reported. Speaking in court on Tuesday, Roberts said: “I blame myself then, I blame myself today, and I’ll blame myself for the rest of my life… I’ve let a lot of people down and I’m the only one responsible for that.” reports.
She also addressed the victim’s family during her sentencing, saying: “To the [victim’s] My family, I’m sorry. “I can’t give back my high school days… I can’t take away the shame that so many bad people on the internet feel.”
In her impact statement in court, the victim’s mother said: “This predator was not hiding in a van carrying candy or puppies. This danger was from a predator with hair extensions, high heels, botox and other modifications.”
She added that she would find her son sitting alone in his room and hear him crying at night.
“At every social event there were questions no teenager should ever ask… Half of his high school experience had been taken away from him,” the victim’s mother said.
He added to Roberts: “Stay away from my family.”
