‘Alcohol & cigarettes won’t kill you’: Mumbai-based sports doctor flags a hidden danger harming your heart, liver and brain

Warning: Stress can be the real silent killer
Dr Vora says people often fear cigarettes and alcohol but overlook something much more common. “Alcohol and cigarettes will not kill you. What will kill you is stress,” he says, describing stress as an attack on the whole body rather than a simple mental burden.

He explains that when pressure builds, the body reacts immediately. “Your body releases cortisol and adrenaline, which is stress when you feel stranded, demoralized, and burned out.”
To him, stress manifests in subtle symptoms that most people ignore: back pain, headaches, shoulder stiffness, jaw grinding, and muscle knots. These are the body’s signals that something is not right.
Why does stress affect your entire body?
Dr Vora says stress works like an invisible weight that people carry every day. “It’s a whole-body response,” he explains, emphasizing how constant pressure forces the body to stay tense for long periods of time.

This tension gradually builds and affects quality of life, he says, especially when people dismiss it as routine fatigue.
How does sleep protect your body from stress?
The danger gets worse when people sleep less, the surgeon warns. “Without deep restorative sleep, your body never has a chance to fully regenerate,” he warns.
Skipping proper rest creates a cycle of burnout, he explains. “Skipping those 7-8 hours means you’re carrying yesterday’s tension into today and adding today’s pressure on top of it. This situation gets worse as the day goes by.”

He says sleep works like the body’s natural reset button. “Deep restorative sleep is your body’s only true reset. That’s when stress hormones drop, muscles finally relax, and tissues repair themselves. You realize it’s not just in the mind, it’s affecting the body, too.”
Dr. Vora’s message is simple but sharp: People may be afraid of bad habits like smoking or drinking, but the habit that can really hurt them is pretending they’re not stressed. The body keeps score, he says, and the only way to reset before damage occurs is through sleep, rest and awareness.
