Friend of Manchester synagogue attacker jailed over separate plot

A friend of the Manchester synagogue attacker has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 17 years for planning a separate attack.

On 14 August 2025, Mohammed Bashir, 31, led Jihad Al-Shamie on a 10-hour round trip to conduct hostile reconnaissance at the UK Defense Academy at Shrivenham in Oxfordshire.

Weeks after the trip, Al-Shamie, 35, was shot dead by police after carrying out an attack on Heaton Park Synagogue in which two Jewish men were killed.

Bashir was previously sentenced to prison after admitting charges of preparing a terrorist act at Manchester Crown Court.
