Increases in Fuel Prices in May: Continuous Increase in Gasoline and Diesel Costs
This marks the third fuel price increase this month and actually the third increase in just over a week.
Petrol and diesel prices were increased by Rs 0.90 per liter earlier this week, following an increase of Rs 3 per liter a few days ago. These frequent revisions underscore the ongoing volatility in fuel prices across India.
Oil Companies Report Heavy Losses in Fuel Sales
State-run oil marketing companies are reportedly under financial pressure, with estimated monthly losses close to 1,000 billion rupees due to selling fuel below market-based rates.
According to reports, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is currently selling diesel at a loss of Rs 25-30 per liter and petrol at a loss of Rs 10-14 per litre.
In contrast, private fuel retailer Shell India is reportedly charging significantly higher prices, with petrol at over Rs 115 per liter and diesel at over Rs 126 per litre.
Government Ensures Adequate Fuel Supply and Warns Against Panic Buying
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured citizens that India has sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel to meet the demand.
In its press release, the Ministry urged people not to resort to panic buying and underlined responsible consumption to ensure smooth supply of fuel during the ongoing period of high demand.
Global Crude Oil Prices Causing Increase
The increase in domestic fuel prices comes amid a sharp rise in international crude oil prices, driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
India imports about 85 percent of its crude oil needs, making domestic fuel prices highly sensitive to global market fluctuations. Brent crude futures recently surpassed $104 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) also saw gains amid volatile trading conditions.
India’s Import Dependence Keeps Fuel Prices Sensitive
In the last two years, India has benefited from discounted Russian crude oil, helping stabilize fuel prices. But with global crude oil trading above $100 a barrel again, state-run oil companies have begun revising their retail prices after a long period of stability.
While uncertainty continues in global markets, fuel prices in India are expected to be highly sensitive to international developments in the coming weeks.
