Gaurav Gogoi Accepts Moral Responsibility For Congress Rout In Assam

Guwahati: A day after the Congress party’s humiliating defeat in the state assembly polls, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday said he accepts moral responsibility for his party’s defeat in the Assembly elections.
Asserting that he will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of the people, Mr. Gogoi told reporters: “As the president of the Assam Pradesh Congress, I accept the moral responsibility of this defeat. But we will always remain firm in this struggle for ideals and continue to fight for the rights and dignity of the people. I am ready to fulfill any responsibility given to me by the senior party leadership in the future.”
Significantly, the Congress recorded its worst-ever performance in this northeastern state as the party’s strength fell to 19 in the 126-member Assembly. The party had won 29 seats in 2021. Mr Gogoi, on the other hand, lost to incumbent BJP MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami from Jorhat by over 23,000 votes.
While expressing his gratitude to the voters who accepted the people’s decision and supported the opposition candidates, he congratulated the winners and expressed hope that they will work for the progress, peace and prosperity of the state.
The Congress was part of a six-party opposition alliance in the elections; Raijor Dal was the only other partner to win seats and secured two constituencies.
Mr Gogoi said the party will analyze the reasons for the defeat and come back with a stronger organisation.
Gogoi, a three-time MP from Jorhat, had won the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
He said the Congress will continue to work as a responsible opposition party by cooperating with the government in its good works while opposing anti-people policies.
