Girl shot in Minneapolis church returns home from the hospital

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A 12 year old girl a person who was shot in the head during an incident fatal attack He was discharged from the hospital on Thursday at a Catholic church in Minneapolis in August and was greeted with cheers as the police chief drove him around town in a stretch limousine, according to the report. On August 27, an attacker with a rifle fired into the church windows and attacked some of the approximately 200 children celebrating Mass during the first week of school, killing two and wounding 17 others. Forchas was rushed into surgery. Neurosurgeon Dr. Walt Galicich said a bullet lodged in his brain, causing serious damage, including a major blood vessel. Surgeons had to remove the left half of his skull to relieve pressure inside his head. At a press conference on September 5, Galicich stated that he was concerned that Forchas could be “the third fatality in this incident.”

He hugged her as she left Hennepin County Medical Center, while many people outside held signs and waved, the Star Tribune reported.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, who accompanied Forchas around the city, called his return home “nothing short of a miracle.”

When they pulled up to his school’s parking lot, he was once again greeted with loud applause and hugs.

In their statement, her parents, Amy and Tom Forchas, expressed their gratitude to the medical professionals who saved their daughter’s life. They described his return home on Thursday as “one of the most extraordinary days of our lives.”

His parents said his recovery journey will continue with outpatient treatment and that he still has a long road to recovery, adding that they are excited to witness daily improvements in his speech, ability to walk and “his personality shining through once again.”

Last week, the return to school of 12-year-old Lydia Kaiser, another child who suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of the shooting, was similarly celebrated, according to an online fundraising page launched to support her family. Kaiser also had surgery to remove a bullet fragment and relieve pressure inside his head.
