Gold Coast councillor caught in fallout from collapsed charity probe

A vanishing raffle car, conflicting press releases and mounting questions over a collapsed charity have placed a Gold Coast councilor at the center of a growing controversy, writes John Todd.

But this lifestyle collapsed when he was arrested and charged. multiple sexual assault crimes.

And the charity operates out of a dozen storefronts We Serve Our PeopleIt was liquidated earlier this year.

Matbouly’s charity pitch and feel-good cause attracted celebrities eager to rub shoulders while also raising money for what appeared to be a worthy cause. One of these was the car raffle.

The reward: a shiny new MG hatchback.

But this is where the feel-good story gets bogged down by two big problems.

First, Gold Coast City Division 6 Councilor Brooke Patterson used a taxpayer-funded credit card to make a purchase $350 raffle ticket – a decision he will make later reversed after public outcry by repaying the amount.

Although the refund transaction had closed, the social media storm revealed that public trust had already been shaken.

Second, the story took a turn. Patterson initially said he never bought the car. Acting City CEO, written correspondence responding to a resident, agreeing, responding to a community advocate: ‘The City Administration never seized the vehicle.’

Then in a jaw-dropping way public videoPatterson said: “Guess who won the car?” – but he donated the car back to charity.

And then the story reverses again.

According to findings attributed to auditors examining the charity, no cars were located or identified; No car ever existed, let alone rewarded and then returned.

Auditors stated that the draw was held multiple times.

A check at the local dealer reported that there was no record of such a vehicle being returned.

So how does a car suddenly appear and disappear? So why would Patterson claim to have returned it? Was the car giveaway an elaborate scam? Who was involved and what was Patterson’s involvement, if any?

Sources familiar with the matter alleged a similar scheme that also involved a residential lottery lottery where auditors were unable to locate an identifiable asset.

Therefore, the following questions become inevitable: What was Patterson’s role in this incident? Why did he publicly say he would “do the right thing” and return a car that never existed?

Community concern continued to grow, with social media across the Gold Coast flooded with demands for answers.

So far, calls for Patterson to address these questions directly have yielded little response; The council stated that it was “seeking legal advice”.

Trying to understand what happened, some community members began asking questions online.

At the same time, multiple Gold Coast social media community pages and profiles were cyber-attacked by St Reynolds.

Planned and frustrating complaints to social media managers triggered account suspensions and account deactivations. These messages were described as alarming or confusing and in some cases were later deleted.

Some recipients, particularly senior Gold Coast residents, reported feeling anxious, unsafe or unsure of the source of the messages. Community pages disappeared overnight.

At the same time, several community-run Facebook pages were reportedly taken offline following automated reporting activity, with page administrators claiming they were unable to recover them.

One user reported:

‘Regarding the ‘outage’ on FB’s Stop the Gold Coast Quarry page, I see you commented about something similar you may have experienced. “We” (I am affiliated with the FB page but do not have control of the FB page) are not sure what caused this technical glitch. During the same period, some settings were changed by the administrator, but we do not know whether this was malicious or not.’

Further questions arise: Were these actions taken by St Reynolds independently or in an official capacity with the knowledge of Paterson and/or his office?

St Reynolds subsequently initiated separate proceedings. Federal Court of Australia Requesting access to user data from Meta Platforms, Inc., alleging harm resulting from online content.

Again, was this done in an official capacity on the taxpayer’s wallet as a paid employee of Gold Coast Council, or was it without Patterson’s knowledge?

Such legal mechanisms exist, but their use in this context has raised concerns among some observers about the potential chilling effect on public comment.

The motivations behind St Reynolds’ actions remain controversial. It was not publicly disclosed whether these steps were taken independently or at Patterson’s direction.

But there is more.

Disturbing pattern of using the courts.

St Reynolds has a strange history of taking to the courts and then to withdraw them.

Other reports on St Reynolds indicate that he disappeared from Patterson on extended leave from all official duties following a workplace incident involving a threat to his life at gunpoint.

There are questions surrounding St Reynolds. Had he resigned from office or completed his term of office?

This is a matter that requires explanation rather than assumption.

And through it all, Patterson’s reaction remained the same.

Silence.

So where does this leave the Gold Coast community?

With more questions than answers:

• Have any cars been provided for the raffle?
• If not, how have conflicting accounts emerged regarding his return?
• What due diligence was done before public officials began working with the charity?
• And what role, if any, did the individuals involved play in responding to public scrutiny?

A complaint was made to the Crime and Corruption Commission to initiate an investigation into the matter.

Until these questions are answered with evidence, this story is unlikely to go away.
