Glasgow fire: Roads shut as 50 firefighters tackle city centre blaze | UK | News

Roads were cordoned off as more than 50 firefighters battled a blaze at an electrical substation in the city centre.

Emergency services responded to the scene on West Nile Street in Glasgow after the alarm went off at around 4.30pm on Saturday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said an H&M store near the substation was evacuated while it dealt with the incident.

Eight fire trucks, a high-reach apparatus and a command support unit were on scene Saturday evening.

People sharing on social media said that explosions and flickering lights were heard in the area just before the incident.

No injuries were reported.

Police stated that some roads were closed and advised people to stay away from the area.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “West Nile Street in Glasgow was closed from Renfield Street to Bath Street following reports of a fire at a premises on West Nile Street at around 4.35pm on Saturday 15 November.

“Drivers are advised to stay away from the area.”

Glasgow City Council’s traffic information bulletin service said West Nile Street between Bath Street and West George Street was closed due to the fire, and West Regent Street between Renfield Street and West Nile Street was closed.
