Golders Green stabbing: A timeline of recent attacks on the UK’s Jewish community as man arrested

The Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth and Israel’s foreign ministry are calling for action following a series of incidents targeting the Jewish community in the UK.

Sir Ephraim Mirvis said “words of condemnation are no longer enough” following the stabbing of two Jewish men in London’s Golders Green on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Israel’s foreign ministry said recent attacks on Jewish sites meant “the UK Government can no longer claim that this is under control”.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder over the Golders Green stabbing and counter-terrorism police have launched an investigation.

Here’s a look at attacks on Jewish sites in the UK in recent months.

Worshipers Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby were killed when Syrian-born British national Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, entered the gates of Heaton Park synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, and then attacked them with a knife while wearing a fake suicide belt.

It was the first fatal antisemitic terror attack in the UK since the Community Security Trust began recording incidents in 1984.

March 23

Four Jewish community ambulances were set on fire in Golders Green, north-west London, in the early hours of the morning.

The vehicles belonged to Hatzola, a volunteer-led ambulance service operating in the area, and investigators investigated allegations that Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia was behind the attack.

A video was published on Telegram containing a map of where the ambulances were kept and footage of them burning.

The arson attacks were carried out in the early hours of the Finchley Reform Synagogue in north-west London and outside the offices of an Iranian media company at around 8.30pm.

Bottles thought to contain petrol were placed near the synagogue on Fallow Court Avenue in Finchley.

The Metropolitan Police said two men wearing dark clothing and balaclavas approached the building and none of the bottles were fired.

They fled the scene without any damage or injuries reported, the statement added.

Hours later, a “fiery container” was thrown at the location of Volant Media, the parent company of Persian-language news channel Iran International.

It landed in a parking lot where the fire was extinguished immediately.

Police said there were no injuries and the suspects left the area in a black four-wheel-drive vehicle.

The items are found near the Israeli embassy in central London in the morning, and a former Jewish charity building in Hendon, Barnet is attacked that night.

Police said a man carrying a plastic bag containing three bottles of liquid was later seen approaching the row of shops.

Police added that after placing the bag near the old Jewish Futures building, he burned the items inside and fled when it failed to fully ignite.

While there was minor damage to the front of the store, there were no injuries.

The video, apparently shared by Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, shows a target over the image of the Israeli embassy and people wearing hazmat suits flying a drone.

Another visible clip of Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia claimed the Hendon attack.

19 April

The Metropolitan Police said a “bottle containing some type of accelerant was thrown through the window” of Kenton United Synagogue in Harrow.

Around midnight, smoke was visible from a room in the synagogue after officers discovered damage to a window.

The video, apparently from Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, shows a man in dark clothing burning an object, throwing it into the synagogue and running away.

Two young people, a 17-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, were arrested in connection with the incident.

27 April

A memorial wall in Golders Green has been targeted in a suspected arson attack.

The Metropolitan Police said it received reports of a fire in the area of Limes Avenue but the wall was not damaged.

The memorial wall was built in memory of the thousands of protesters killed in January’s crackdown in Iran and is located near a Jewish centre.

A section of the wall is dedicated to those killed in Hamas’ attack on the Nova music festival in Israel in 2023, while a more recent declaration of solidarity for the Jewish community is pinned to a nearby tree following the latest attacks.

29 April

Two Jewish men, one in his 70s, were stabbed in Golders Green Road in an apparent anti-Semitic attack.

A man was arrested after he was seen running with a knife and “attempting to stab Jewish members of the public,” Jewish security group Shomrim said in a statement on social media.

The 45-year-old suspect allegedly tried to stab officers when he was stopped and was tasered before being arrested.
