Gruesome drug cartel warning as five human heads strung up on beach | World | News

Holidaymakers were treated to a gruesome sight on a popular beach in Ecuador this month when five severed heads were displayed along with a chilling warning.

The heads were discovered in Puerto López, a small fishing village on the country’s Pacific coastline known for its whale watching and picturesque shores.

Recently, the town has fallen victim to drug trafficking cartels due to the increase in cocaine smuggling across the country.

Authorities linked the grisly incident to hostilities between rival crime syndicates in the area.

In the images circulating on social media, five heads can be seen hanging on a rope stretched between two wooden stakes.

Below the heads is a message: “The town belongs to us. Keep robbing fishermen and demanding protection payments, we’ve already spotted you.”

Police confirmed the remains belonged to five men aged between 20 and 34 who were reported missing in recent weeks. Their bodies are unknown reports the mirror.

Ecuador is a small South American country located between Colombia and Peru, two of the world’s largest cocaine producers.

This positioning has made Ecuador one of the most dangerous countries on the continent. Mexico now has the highest murder rate in South America, surpassing Colombia and Brazil.

The year 2025 was the bloodiest year in the country’s history, with 9,176 murders recorded; an unprecedented figure.

By contrast, England and Wales recorded just 535 murders in 2025, despite having a population five times larger than Ecuador.

Ecuador’s Pacific coast cities such as Puerto López have emerged as “the region’s most efficient transit points” for cocaine shipments bound for Europe and the United States, according to human rights watchdog International Crisis Group.

On December 28, 2025, six people, including a two-year-old child, were killed when a gunman opened fire on a beach in Puerto López. Six more people lost their lives in the armed attack the previous day.

The massacre was linked to tensions within Los Choneros, a local gang.

The group is estimated to have as many as 20,000 members and is recognized as a terrorist organization by the US government.
