Greek man charged with assisting foreign intelligence service ‘linked to Iran’

A Greek man has been accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service in targeting a UK-based journalist.

Ioannis Aidinidis, 46, of Munich, Germany, was charged with offenses under the National Security Act on Friday following an investigation by London Counter Terrorism Police (CTP), Scotland Yard said.

The Metropolitan Police said the country to which the allegations relate is believed to be Iran and that the allegations relate to the targeting of a UK-based journalist working for Iran International.

Aidinidis is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later.

He was arrested in West Sussex on 16 May by detectives from CTP London, supported by officers from CTP South East.

CTP London chair Commander Helen Flanagan said: “We know this may cause concern for many people in the UK, particularly those working in the Persian language media sector.

“We continue to work closely with a number of organizations and individuals to provide them with advice and support regarding their safety and security, and this includes certain individuals and organizations linked to this investigation.

“If anyone has concerns about their safety they can contact their local police force and further advice and support can be provided.”

Police said there was not believed to be a wider threat to the public.
