Gurumoorthy Prompts Centre Action on Pulicat Dispute

Nellore: The Center has initiated measures to address recurring inter-state disputes between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu fishermen in Pulicat Lake following representations made by Tirupati MP Dr Maddila Gurumoorthy in Parliament.

Responding to the issue raised under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, Union fisheries minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh said the government has undertaken the restoration of the Rayadoruvu sea estuary at an estimated cost of Rs 133.11 billion. The project, for which all necessary environmental and maritime permits have been obtained, is expected to improve seawater flow, revitalize the lake ecosystem, increase fish production and benefit approximately 20,000 fishing families.

In a letter addressed to his MP, the minister acknowledged that falling water levels and blockage of sea inlets during the summer months force fishermen in both states to often fish in the same areas, leading to frequent border disputes and clashes.

The Center has also put in place a joint monitoring mechanism involving officials from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to prevent such incidents. District-level authorities of both states have intensified coordinated patrols and enforcement measures against boats illegally entering the neighboring state’s waters.

Welcoming the Centre’s response, MP Gurumoorthy said the steps will help protect the livelihood and safety of thousands of fishermen dependent on Pulicat Lake. He assured that he will continue to pursue the issue with the Center and state governments until a permanent solution is achieved.
