Harrowing video shows CNN’s Wolf Blitzer left shaken and missing a shoe after narrowly escaping gunfire at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was seen visibly shaken in heartbreaking footage captured moments after he narrowly escaped a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Blitzer, 78, was just ‘yards away’ from the gunman when he heard about six shots fired at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night.

As he was about to leave the upstairs men’s restroom, he was confronted by the suspected attacker, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen.

‘Then I realized that several police officers were jumping on me trying to protect me. “I think that’s when the gunman got shot, I could be wrong but he stopped shooting,” Blitzer said. CNN. ‘It was a very scary moment for me.’

While President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were being evacuated from the nearby ballroom, Blitzer was taken back to the bathroom by officers, at which time he appeared to have lost his shoe.

Eyewitness Jack Fattall, who was in the area when the chaos occurred, recorded the panic at that moment on video.

“He was being shot at,” Fattall told the Daily Mail. ‘The shooter was shooting towards him, so he had to duck to the ground before running to the bathroom.’

Within seconds, gunshots began to ring out and Blitzer was directly in the line of fire, he said.

“Of course the first thing that went through my mind was whether he was going to shoot me,” Blitzer told CNN.

‘I saw the gunman on the ground after he started shooting,’ he added. ‘Police officers threw him to the ground but he was still shooting. And I could hear the gunshots going off.’

In the footage shared by Fattall, Blitzer can be seen taking a few steps forward, wearing only one shoe and covering his other foot with only a black sock.

He appeared to be in shock, standing still with ragged breathing, and when asked what had happened he gave vague, vague answers, saying he ‘heard a series of gunshots right next to me’.

Fattall, who is also seen in the video, said officers took Blitzer back to the restroom, where about 15 men were seen taking shelter with the door blocked by a Secret Service agent.

“Secret Service basically held the door, held us in, and started pointing the gun at least at the shooter,” Fattall said.

‘At one point the attacker fell to the ground but they still kept us in the bathroom for about 25 minutes until they kicked us out of the event,’ he added.

Trump was removed from the stage when gunshots were heard at the hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where the president, who attended for the first time since 2015, would be honored and give a speech.

Erika Kirk was also among the first people evacuated and was later seen in tears as what appeared to be two Secret Service agents escorted her away.

As cabinet members were lifted over a barricade and taken to safety, a Secret Service agent wearing a protective vest was confirmed to have been shot. The agent, whose condition was unknown, was taken to the hospital.

Police discovered Allen had several weapons on him, including a shotgun, a handgun and several knives. He was charged with firearms and assault charges.

Video footage shows the suspect running in a blur, trying to reach the ballroom doors just seconds before he opened fire. It is thought that he may have been a guest of the hotel.

Trump announced the suspect’s capture in his Truth Social post.

The president also shared a photo during a press conference shortly afterwards showing the suspect shirtless and lying face down on the ground, describing him as a “very sick person.”

‘He’s a lone wolf, crazy business. These are crazy people. “Sick, sick people,” he said.
