Heavy Rains Likely in Western Ghats Region of Tamil Nadu

Chennai: IMD has predicted heavy rains in the Western Ghat regions of Tamil Nadu from July 1 as the southwest monsoon is still active in the state. In the latest weather report published by the Regional Meteorological Center on Tuesday, it was stated that moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km per hour are likely to occur in isolated places in Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Erode and Salem districts and ghat regions of Coimbatore and Tirupur districts from Wednesday.

The data also said that since the trough extends from Tamil Nadu on the north coast to Comorin district and extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level, light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places and thunderstorms and lightning at one or two places in the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal district during the same period.

However, maximum temperatures are expected to be above normal in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal region from June 30 to July 3.

Chinnakas in Coimbatore recorded a maximum rainfall of nine cm in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Tuesday, followed by Vennavalkudi in Pudukkottai, which recorded seven cm rainfall at the same time.

While Madurai Airport recorded the highest maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius over Tamil Nadu, Kodaikanal recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 12.9 degrees Celsius in the hilly areas of the state during the same period.

Regarding Chennai, the report stated that the Met Office stated that light to moderate showers and thunderstorms may occur in the evening or night hours from Tuesday.
