Heavy Rains, Strong Winds Batter Parts of Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Kerala, especially the northern districts, on Tuesday, causing widespread waterlogging and prompting precautionary evacuation measures in some areas. While the southwest monsoon continues to remain active in the state, heavy night rains have affected both urban and elevated areas of Kozhikode district.
Television visuals showed that parts of Kozhikode city, including the coastal road area, were flooded and the waterlogging disrupted normal life and many restaurants operating in the area were affected.
In Thrissur district, authorities shifted five families from Areshwaram area in Mattathur village panchayat to a relief camp opened at a local government school amid fears of a possible landslide in the area.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall and gusty winds of up to 40 kmph are likely at one or two places in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The weather agency also predicts light rains at isolated places in the remaining parts of the state.
Authorities advised people living in sensitive areas to be careful due to ongoing monsoon activities.
