High street giant closes two stores this weekend | UK | News

Poundland closed two more stores yesterday, closing branches in Oldham, Manchester and Ballymena in County Antrim. The closures come amid a major shakeup to the business following a sale earlier this year. Poundland was sold by Pepco to investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1, triggering a widespread restructuring program across its UK property.

Since the sale, the chain has been working to shrink its store network, with more than 100 branches expected to close once the current closure period is complete. Stores affected by the closures launched major sale events with discounts of up to 40% to replenish remaining stocks.

Once the restructuring is complete, Poundland expects its UK network to shrink from around 800 stores to between 650 and 700; This indicates a significant reduction in high street presence.

Darren MacDonald, Poundland’s UK country manager, said: “We know how disappointing it is to leave a store, but we are determined to say goodbye to our customers by delivering even more amazing value before we close our doors for the final time.

“In addition to the value we provide in each of our stores, special discounts will also help us leave the places we leave with pride.

“And when we close our doors, we look forward to welcoming customers to one of the hundreds of Poundland stores we will continue to operate across the UK.”

Poundland has confirmed that a further 12 stores will close before the end of the year; Other stores are planned to be closed in early 2026. Locations scheduled to close before the end of 2025 include locations in Brighton, Weston-super-Mare, Farnham and Portadown.
