Shabana Mahmood said she would speak to her Australian counterpart about the incident at Bondi Beach later on Sunday.
The Home Secretary told the BBC’s show with Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday: “I came into the studio this morning and saw the breaking news.
“I can fully understand the concern this may cause for people living here about relatives in Australia, but above all our thoughts must be with the victims of this attack in Australia and the Australian people.
“We will of course be watching closely as details emerge about exactly what happened and I will speak to my Australian counterpart later today.”
