House Democrat says colleague once claimed ‘all the Jews are rich’

Rep. Becca Balint told CNN on Tuesday an example of a fellow House Democrat dismissing antisemitism by saying “all Jews are rich.”

Balint was one of the Jewish Democratic politicians. He spoke to CNN It’s about concerns about a growing sense of anti-Semitism among grassroots campaigns that have begun to influence established political figures like California state Sen. Scott Wiener.

He told CNN he was “shaken” [her] After seeing Wiener heckled by anti-Israel activists for his past support of Israel and Jewish heritage.

“He described a familiar pain,” the article read. “Like, for example, people telling her that homophobia doesn’t exist and then asking her what it means that she’s a lesbian. For example, her unnamed House Democratic colleague came to a bipartisan antisemitism task force meeting and said, ‘I didn’t think there was any antisemitism anymore because all the Jews are rich.’ “Like those who accuse Jewish politicians of dual allegiance.”

While Balint agrees with progressive Democrats who claim Israel is guilty of “committing genocide” in Gaza, he told CNN he still fears a “day of reckoning” for himself for his support of the Jewish state.

“I know that at some point there will come a day of reckoning because I still believe that Jews should have a homeland,” Balint said. “There will be people (some of my own supporters, I guess) who will turn against me because I still believe in the two-state solution. I still do. I still believe that Israel should be safe and secure. I believe that the Palestinians have been mistreated for too long and deserve a safe and secure homeland. I do not believe that Israel should be broken up.”

Other Jewish Democrats have expressed concern that Israel has become a political “litmus test” for them, despite their support for other progressive causes and criticism of the Israeli government.

“The experience of being a Jewish Democrat is feeling like no matter what the issue is, whether it’s affordable housing, it’s just a matter of time before someone ties it to Israel,” New York City comptroller Mark Levine said. “What is the list of litmus test topics?

“As far as I know, at this point this is just a list of questions about Israel. We are progressives. We are certainly ready to criticize the actions of the current Israeli government. And we are. But right now we feel excluded from many areas, and it is difficult to conclude that it is not because we are Jews.”

Michigan State Representative Noah Arbit told CNN he believes anti-Semitism is perpetuated under the guise of criticizing Israel.

“I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to call myself a Democrat again after I leave office,” Arbit said. “I don’t know how Jews can think you can align with any political movement when the base is so hostile to who you are and your community.”
